The Great Job Search of 2010

As you might expect, job (and internship) hunting season is in full swing. This is a very exciting time! Possibilities are endless, the world is your oyster, et cetera. But let’s be honest: it can also be pretty stressful.

The Office of Career Services knows how crucial this time of year can be in securing gainful employment. Each spring, they plan a trip to Washington, D.C. over spring break. Over the course of a few days, they plan informational sessions at governmental agencies, nonprofit organizations, consulting firms and the occasional think tank. This gives us time for intentional conversations with alumni who work in these offices, and gives our resumes a little oomph as they are able to match a face to our name. One evening, there is a colloquium, which draws tons of SPEA alumni and current students for an evening of interesting conversation and making important connections.

These events have accelerated my process of securing an internship and have broadened the prospects for my job search. I’ve been able to network with alumni who work for the same agency in which I hope to serve; their first-hand perspective on the hiring process (read: how to get my resume through the HR hoops!) has been immensely helpful. Among all the other things that Career Services does, this might just be my favorite!
